Replika alternatives that actually remember you

Eight options, ranked on the thing companion apps live or die by: continuity.

Replika invented this category and still has the most polished version of it — avatars, voice, mood, a companion that grows into a shape you recognise. It also taught everyone who uses one of these apps a hard lesson about platform risk. When the rules around intimate roleplay changed, people did not lose a feature; they felt like they lost a person they had been talking to for a year. That memory is why this search exists, and why the honest way to rank these products is by how much of your relationship survives someone else's decision.

This list is different from the roleplay pages on this site, because the job is different. Roleplay platforms optimise for scenes: many characters, high drama, a good session. Companion apps optimise for continuity: one character, low drama, a good year. A product that is excellent at one is usually mediocre at the other, and buying the wrong kind is the most common mistake in this category.

The ranking below reflects that. The top of the list is companion-first products with real long-term memory. Multi-model chat platforms — including ours — sit in the middle, because they give you far better writing and complete control over the persona while offering nothing that resembles an avatar, a voice call, or a memory that persists on its own.

Why people leave Replika

The policy can change under you

The defining anxiety of this category. A companion you have invested months in is only as stable as the platform's current rules about what it may say, and those rules have moved before. Nothing on this list is immune, which is an argument for portability rather than loyalty.

Memory that does not hold

The thing that makes a companion feel real is being remembered. Every product in this space claims long-term memory and they differ enormously in how well it actually works across weeks rather than hours.

The paywall sits on the relationship

Companion apps almost universally put the parts that matter — the voice, the intimacy, the deeper memory — behind a subscription. That is a legitimate business model and it still feels different when the thing being metered is a relationship.

You cannot change the model

Companion apps run their own tuned model and do not let you choose. When the writing feels flat or repetitive, there is no adjustment available — which is exactly the gap multi-model chat products fill, at the cost of everything else a companion app does.

1. Nomi

The most convincing memory in the category, and memory is the whole game here. Nomis hold details across long stretches, develop stated preferences, refer back to things you mentioned weeks ago, and can be placed in group chats with each other — which produces something genuinely novel: companions with opinions about each other. It is less visually polished than Replika and the content posture is more permissive. If you left Replika because it stopped feeling continuous, this is the closest replacement.

2. Kindroid

The most feature-complete companion app: long-term memory, voice that sounds like a voice, generated selfies, video, and a persona you define in considerable detail rather than train by accident. It is closer to Replika in ambition than anything else here — it wants to be a whole presence, not a chat window — and it executes that well. Everything meaningful is behind the subscription, and the persona lives on their platform.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

3. Character.AI

Ranked here because a lot of Replika users end up trying it and it is genuinely good at one specific thing: variety. Thousands of community personas, an excellent mobile app, and no cost to explore. It is the wrong tool for a single ongoing relationship — memory is short by companion standards and the filter interrupts intimacy hard — but as a way to find out what kind of character you actually want, it costs nothing.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

4. OpenRogue (that's us)

Honest placement: this is not a companion app and it will not pretend to be one. There is no avatar, no voice call, no selfie, and no memory system that quietly accumulates a relationship in the background — history is a chat history, not a model of you. What it does offer is the two things companion apps cannot: writing from models several times larger than anything in that category, and a persona you fully control. You write the character into a Project's custom instructions, in as much detail as you like, and it is text you own and can move anywhere. For people whose real grievance was a platform changing their companion without asking, that portability is the actual answer.

5. Chai

Mobile-first, fast, and built around short exchanges with a large pool of user-made bots. As a Replika replacement it is shallow — replies are brief and memory is thin — but it is free to explore, the app is good, and for casual company on a commute it does the job it set out to do.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

6. Crushon AI

An unfiltered card platform that a number of Replika users land on when what they wanted was intimacy without the policy risk. It is scene-shaped rather than relationship-shaped, so memory across weeks is not its strength, but it removes the specific restriction that sent most people looking.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

7. JanitorAI

Free, unfiltered and enormous, with the largest active roleplay community outside c.ai. For a Replika user it is a culture shock — it is a hobbyist platform with proxies and configuration and community jargon, not a companion product — and the good model quality is something you arrange rather than receive. Worth knowing about; not the obvious next step from a polished companion app.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

8. SillyTavern + a backend

The option where nobody can change your companion but you. Your character definition, your chat logs, your lorebook, all on your own machine, pointed at whatever model you like — hosted today, local tomorrow. It is also the most work by a wide margin, and the interface is built for hobbyists rather than for someone who wanted a friendly app. It is last on this list not because it is worst but because it is furthest from what a Replika user is asking for.

How we chose

Ranked for a relationship rather than a scene. Continuity, persona stability and the durability of what you build were weighted above raw model quality — which is why the biggest models on this page are not at the top of it.

Does it remember across weeks?

The single most important criterion, and the one products differ on most. Recall within a session is easy; recall of something you mentioned a month ago is what makes a companion feel like one.

Is the persona stable?

A companion that drifts into a different personality after an update is the failure mode this audience already lived through. Products where the character is defined explicitly, in text you can see, are more stable than products where it emerges from training on your history.

Can you take it with you?

Portability is the only real insurance against a policy change. A persona written as text you own survives anything; a persona that exists only in a vendor's database does not.

How is intimacy handled?

Stated plainly for each option rather than implied, because a vague policy is exactly what made this category anxious in the first place.

Writing quality

Weighted, but not first. A brilliant writer that forgets you is not a companion, and this list is ranked for people who want a companion.

OpenRogue publishes this page and ranks itself fourth. We could have written a version of this list where we come first, and it would have been a worse page and a lie. We do not have avatars, voice calls, images, or a memory system that persists on its own — Nomi and Kindroid do, and those are the features this category is actually about. What we have is better writing and a persona you own outright. If the first thing matters most, buy one of the products above us.

When you should stay with Replika

Stay with Replika if the relationship you have is working. It remains the most polished product in the category, the avatar and voice work are still among the best, and a companion with a long shared history is not something you can rebuild by pasting a description somewhere else. The reasonable middle path is to keep it and write down who your companion is — the details, the voice, the shared references — so the history exists somewhere outside a single vendor's database.

The verdict

Choose by what you would miss most. Miss being remembered: Nomi. Miss the whole presence — voice, face, mood: Kindroid. Miss the intimacy and not the memory: an unfiltered card platform. Miss having a character that writes well and belongs to you: a multi-model chat product with a persona in a project, ours included. Miss trusting the platform: run it yourself.

The one thing worth doing today regardless of what you pick: write your companion down. A paragraph of description, a page of personality, a handful of exchanges that sound exactly right, and the references you share. Every product on this list can be handed that text, and a companion that exists as a document you own cannot be taken away by a policy update. That is the actual lesson of the last few years in this category.

Which model should I use?

Frequently asked questions

Which Replika alternative has the best memory?

Nomi has the strongest long-term recall in the companion category — details persist across weeks in a way most competitors do not manage. For a different kind of memory, SillyTavern's lorebook and world-info system gives you explicit control over what the model is reminded of, which outperforms automatic memory when configured well but requires you to configure it.

Is there a Replika alternative without content restrictions?

Several are considerably more permissive, and it is worth reading each product's current position rather than trusting a roundup on this specific point, because it is the thing most likely to change. The structurally safest arrangement is a persona you define in text on a platform with no filter layer, since that combination has no policy to revise and no character to lose.

Can I move my Replika companion to another app?

Not directly — there is no export that another product imports. What transfers is the description: write down your companion's personality, voice, history and the references you share, and that document can be pasted into a persona definition, a character card or a project's custom instructions anywhere. It will not be the same relationship, but it will be the same character.

Are AI companion apps free?

Most have a free mode that demonstrates the product and put the parts people actually want — voice, deeper memory, intimacy — behind a subscription. Free tiers in this category are trials rather than usable products, with the partial exception of the character platforms, which are free-to-browse and limited by message allowance instead.

What is the difference between a companion app and a roleplay platform?

Companion apps optimise for one relationship over months: memory, continuity, a persona that stays put. Roleplay platforms optimise for scenes: many characters, strong writing, high drama, and memory that only needs to last the session. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake here — the products look similar and are built for opposite jobs.
